A new punk band has arrived, so girls, let’s do it flashy!
Fans of the ‘fancy animal’ punk band Knuckle Chiwawa can look forward to a new all girl punk outfit headed by long time punker and legendary front woman Shibakuzo Rei-chan.
Now, Meriken Chiwawa has become a separate unit with Rei-chan on vocals, Yamada Oi on guitar, and Hitsuji on bass. And these girls are ready to bring some fresh and flashy punk rock onto the scene.
Rei-chan has been active in the underground alternative scene in Japan for over a decade, most recently with Knuckle Chiwawa, releasing music and touring extensively with them since 2019. However, she tells us ‘It’s time for girl punk bands now!’
Gritty, fast and in your face, we can expect Meriken Chiwawa to tear up the stage with their explosive live performance. Releasing first single “Shibakuzo no Theme” back in April 2023, Yamada and Hitsuji officially joined the ranks a month later making Meriken Chiwawa a 3-piece.
Rei-chan, Yamada and Hitsuji joined Beyond Senpai to chat about the debut of the new unit. Lets do it flashy!

Beyond Senpai: Welcome! Please introduce yourselves!
Beyond Senpai: ようこそ！まず自己紹介をお願いします。
Rei: Meriken Chihuahua! Originally, the members of Knuckle Chihuahua worked concurrently with this project. But we sacked them all and restarted as a girl band with pretty girls! It’s time for girl punk bands now!
零: メリケンチワワだ！元々は、ナックルチワワのメンバーが兼任して活動していたが、全員クビにして可愛い女を集めてガールズバンドとして始動させた！これからはガールズパンクバンドの時代じゃ！
BS: Congratulations on your debut! How does it feel?
BS: デビューおめでとうございます！ 現在の心境は？
Rei: I’m happy that many people gave us attention because it’s our first all-girl band! You’ve got to give me more of your attention.
零: 初めてのガールズバンドということで多くの人がアクションをくれて嬉しいぜ！もっとかまってくれ
Yamada: This is my first real band activity outside of school, so I’m excited that something great has come out of it.
山田: 学校の部活以外での本格的なバンド活動はこれが初めてなので何か凄いことになっちゃったとワクワクしてます
Hitsuji: The response has been better than I thought it would be, and I’ve had to work harder.
ひつじ: 自分が思っていた以上の反響があって頑張らなきゃなあって思っています
BS: What can we expect from the new band?
BS: 新しいバンドには何を期待できますか?
Rei: There aren’t many female punk bands around. There are more and more girls and young people in Japan who are wearing punk fashion, and I’d be happy if we could get them interested in the music as well as the fashion! And for them to come to our live shows.

BS: How do you get your inspiration for your music?
BS: あなたは音楽を作るにあたって、どのようにインスピレーションを得ていますか？
Rei: I put all the anger and resentment I feel in my everyday life into my music! Punk for me is anger.
零: 日常の中で感じる、怒りや鬱憤を全て音楽に詰め込んでいるぜ！俺にとってパンクは怒りだ
BS: What bands inspire you and who would you like to perform on stage with?
BS: これまで影響を受けたのはどんなバンドですか？また、ステージで共演してみたい人はいますか？
Rei: It’s the Korean girl punk band Rumkicks! I’m insanely curious about them! It looks like they’re coming to Japan and I’m looking forward to it! I want to play alongside them.
零: 韓国のガールズパンクバンド、ラムキックスだ！めちゃくちゃ気になる！日本にも来るみたいだし楽しみだ！対バンしたい！
Yamada: I’ve been influenced by so many bands that I’ve become lost in the music I want to play! The band I’ve been listening to the most recently is the Italian rock band Måneskin! They’re so cool 
I want to do some intense rock myself!
山田: たくさんのバンドに影響を受けて自分のやりたい音楽が迷子になってきました！最近1番聴いてるバンドはイタリアのロックバンド、Måneskinです！！すんごいかっこいい激しいロック自分もやりたい！！
Hitsuji: I am influenced by Japanese rock music. But I will study punk bands from now on!
ひつじ: 日本の邦楽ロックに影響を受けています。パンクバンドはこれから勉強します！
BS: Do you feel any pressure when performing to potential new fans?
BS: これからファンになるかもしれない新しい観客の前で演じる時、何かプレッシャーを感じることがありますか？
Hitsuji: It’s been a long time since I’ve been on stage, so I might not be able to think that far ahead lol.
ひつじ : 久しぶりのステージなのでそこまで頭が回らないかもしれません笑
Yamada: I’m someone who hasn’t felt much pressure since I was a child, so I don’t have anything special to offer! For now, I just want to do what I can do!
山田: 小さい頃からプレッシャーはあまり感じない人間なので特にこれといったものはないです！とりあえず自分の出来ることをやっていきたい！
Rei: There isn’t any! Anyone who wants a fun punk gig, follow me!
零: ない！楽しいパンクのライブがみたいやつは、俺についてこい！
BS: How do you prepare for your live shows and do you have a backstage ritual?
BS: ライブ出演の際、どのように準備をしますか？また何かご自身の儀式みたいなことはありますか？
Rei: I’m going to bring down the hardcore scary oaf who lives in my heart!
零: 心の中に住むハードコアな怖いオッさんを降臨させる！
BS: What are your hopes for the future?
BS: これからの将来についての希望を教えてください。
Hitsuji: It’s an unknown world, so I’d like to catch up with Rei-san first and have fun performing in various places.
ひつじ: 未知の世界なので零さんにまずは追いついていって、いろんな場所で楽しくライブをしたいです
Yamada: We want to create music that we can enjoy playing, and that people who come to our gigs and listen to our songs can enjoy. Music is really something to be enjoyed 🐼◎
山田: 演奏している自分たちも、ライブに来てくれたり曲を聴いてくれたりする方々も楽しめるような音楽を創っていきたいです！！音楽は楽しむものだもん🐼◎
BS: Do you have a message for your fans?
